Church: Why go to Church?

Church is important. There are so many reasons to go to church. In this broken, sinful world it is hard to be a Christian. We need encouragement. We need time alone with God. We need community and communication.

God tells us to meet with other Christians! Now while this doesn't necessarily have to be at church, it is a great resource to use. When you go to church you get to learn from someone who has studied the Bible in depth. Another benefit of going to church and meeting with other Christians is you get to hear new perspectives or be introduced to things you have never thought about or realized. It's always good to have different perspectives because if you don't learn something new you may learn how to talk to people with different views than yourself. We grow more together than we do apart. We are able to contribute and notice different things. There is a slew of knowledge among believers.

2 Timothy 4:2

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

Church is a great place to enjoy community with other believers. Why is this important? Because iron sharpens iron. It's a tough world out there, especially for us Christians who are constantly under attack. We need encouragement to continue living for Christ and loving Christ. We need to hear others struggles, relate to each other, and give hope and love for our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Another reason to go to church is because you get to spend time with God.

Colossians 3:16 "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts." Look at that first part real closely. "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly." Dwelling on bad situations isn't a good thing, but dwelling on Christ? Thats an amazing thing. We should all dwell with Christ constantly. What better way to spend time with Christ than in His house, where we have time to spend with Him. It allows us to hear his word, and get some explanation out of it. I think most importantly, going to church makes us humble ourselves to Christ. To put aside a certain time every week where we are not focused on anything else. We are focused on God. We are not putting idols above our all powerful God. We are devoted, we are saying, "God I am willing to learn, I am not distracted, I am not worried about anything, I am 100% here."

I know there are a lot of reasons not to go to church. You want to sleep in, you have to work, you are spending time with friends, you are going shopping, etc. etc. I'm not saying you can't miss a week, but know where your priorities are. Is sleeping more important than God? If you have to work on Sunday mornings what about Saturday evening, or Sunday evening. There is no excuse for not going to church. Don't take being able to go to church for granted. Many of our fellow Christians around the world aren't able to freely worship God. As the saying goes, "If you really care about something, you will make time for it." Life can get hectic and crazy sometimes, but church is a great place to say, "I am here God. You are my first priority. Thank you for my life and the love you give me."

Matthew 6:33

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
