A Good Example

Matthew 5: 16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

George H W Bush was an outstanding man. Those close to me know I enjoy history. I am privileged to go to a university that is home to the George H W Bush presidential Library and Museum. I enjoy going there often and taking people there. I never get tired of hearing about the failures, trials, and successes of Mr. and Mrs. Bush’s lives. I have great respect for President Bush; not because he was president, successful in the oil business, etc. but because He was a faithful brother in Christ. In my opinion, you can not know George H W Bush without knowing of his faith. He knew that money and fame was nothing. He did not regard himself as privileged or entitled to the role of President but he was humble. In a video shown at the museum he says people often asked if it was a disappointment only being at the White House for four years and he answers that it was a privilege to be there at all. George H W Bush knew that life was not about oil, money, or being the president but it was about Christ. It was a privilege to have a platform to honor Him and spread His word; that regardless of title he was loved. George H W Bush did not put God first because it looked good for his campaign or because it was popular. He put God first from an early point in his life because he knew the joy, hope, peace, and love that God provides. He knew that all of his work on earth would be in vain if not for Christ’s loving sacrifice.

George H W Bush was a man of God. And for that reason I admire him and look up to him as an example of how to live out a life for Christ. And my hope is that when I go to heaven one day people remember me not for the worldly accomplishments that I make but as someone who loved Christ and put him at the forefront of all I do. Barbara Bush said of George, “You don’t talk about your faith you act out your faith.” A lot of times acting out our faith can be a stronger witness than our words could ever be.

There are so many quotes of George H W Bush that I could put here but here are two that ring true for all of us. "History will point out some of the things I did wrong and some of the things I did right." and “Our God is a forgiving God.” We will all do things on this earth that are pleasing to others and to God and we will all do things on this earth that are displeasing to others and to God but because our God forgives we don’t have to worry! We are still saved by God’s grace alone!!!

I had the honor of seeing both Barbara and , today, George H. W.’s funeral processions to their final earthly resting place. I mourn with joy because I know George and Barbara are not gone but they are in eternal paradise with a savior that loves them, me, and all of you.
