It is a Christian Problem

Abortion is seen by many as a political issue. One that should not be talked about because it might anger someone or make someone uncomfortable. But I completely disagree. Abortion is not a political issue, its a Christian problem. Abortion is not just a problem in America, but around the world. (Before you stop reading because you think I’m a moron, I will agree that abortion is a political issue. I was in a Political Science class in college that discussed the issue of abortion for two weeks.) But what I mean by this is that as Christians we should make our voices heard on this topic so that the people in our country AND outside of our country know where we stand on this topic. Because, honestly if you are not Christian then abortion has a completely different meaning to you. You may have similar beliefs that a fetus IS a human etc., but you do not place the same value on human life as Christians are CALLED to have. The unborn babies will not be your brothers or sisters, but for me they could be my brother or sister in Christ. As Christians we should understand that Christ created EACH human being, unique and with a purpose; that He did not create any person to be on this earth for the fun of it. He loves each person and He wants each person to know Him and spread His love throughout this world. He did not die for animals or plants, but He died for humans because He cares for us more than anything else.

Psalm 139:13-16

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Romans 5:6-8
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The devil tries to turn everything in the world to evil, as a Christian you should know that. Foolishness covers this world like a weighted blanket, providing a sense of comfort. We get distracted by the things of this world; things that Christ reminds us will NOT matter in eternity, We must remember that NOTHING is more important than Christ, nothing. But, as sinners we think of convenience and selfishness first. We look at how something will make us feel or how it will create an ease in our life, rather than what God says about the issue. We live in a world where plastic is evil but murdering children is perfectly fine. We complain that we are not having enough children to replace ourselves, but in reality, we are but have chosen to care more about the now rather than the future. We only use science as fact if it helps our cause. We get mad at pastors for preaching the TRUTH about God’s opinion on abortion because it doesn’t make us feel good. But God says that abortion is evil. It is murder. It is a sin. But because it makes our lives easier, we are okay with it.

Psalm 106: 37-40

They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves. Therefore the Lord was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance.

I will admit that a lot of times the passion Christians and others have for stopping abortion can come off as hate. We push the law; that it is not right, that it is evil. The compassion and love behind our disapproval of abortion gets lost. We get mad at people who have had abortions, when they were vulnerable, scared, and thought they had no choice. Many who agree with abortion don’t know the horror of the procedure, they don’t know why we believe it is wrong, because all they see is disapproval. We must push through our sinful nature to show love to those that we disagree with, to show love to those hurting and to show love to those who think we are wrong. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” People forget that MLK Jr. was a pastor, He was talking about God’s light. We must be God’s light to drive out all darkness and evil in the world, to drive out abortion. (While I know Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting a different fight, I challenge you to google “MLK Jr. quotes” and look at these quotes in the context of abortion… a lot of them will fit. They will make you want to do more, at least they have for me.)

John 1:5

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Proverbs 31:8-9

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

God calls us to protect those who can not protect themselves. It is our job to protect unborn children. People should be angry and uncomfortable about abortion because it is wrong. It’s easy to become discouraged and think that abortion is a too big of a mountain to move. But remember Christ CAN move mountains. Show the truth; make it impossible for people to turn a cold shoulder to the issue. Because it IS important. A child is killed every 30 seconds in America… that is just in America (Save a Child, 2019). Christ wants us to fight for Him! Christ wants us to fight for His children. Christ wants us to use Him as a shield in a fight we think we have no chance in… because with God all things are possible.

Matthew 17:20

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Prayer is powerful. If you don’t know how to handle the problem of abortion pray about it. Pray for those who are actively trying to stop it. Pray for those who are considering abortion that Christ would show them the light. Pray for those who think abortion is good and right, that they may know the truth. Pray that more people would consider adoption as a way to show God’s love.

Psalm 145:18

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

Abortion is not a political issue because it exists around the world. It’s a Christian problem because somewhere along the way we decided that God’s way was not the most important. We started believing our own feelings were more important than God’s Word. We allowed the problem to be quieted. It is a Christian problem, because as Christians it is our job to spread God’s Word and to encourage other Christians to do the same. His Word that is true, that cannot be changed. To tell everyone that Christ loves every single person and that He wants them to live. All these people, the more than 60,000,000 in America, and countless elsewhere have died for no cause at all (60,069,971 Abortions in America Since Roe v. Wade in 1973, 2018). We must protect our brothers and sisters, we must protect those who can’t protect themselves, we must love all people God has created. God sent His Son to die on the cross for the ultimate cause so that NO ONE would have to die and all people could live, forever. How sad must He be that all those people He died for do not have a chance to live on the earth that He created for them.

Hebrews 10:9-10

Then Jesus said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
